Dear Fellow Entrepreneur,
If someone put a gun to your head and said you had to sell a bunch of your products—or else! Would you panic? Or would you
grin so hard your cheeks hurt, knowing you could easily do it?
The truth is, such a formula for foolproof success in any marketing campaign has been around for a very long time. But it's often misunderstood,
rarely used correctly, and frankly, not as well known as it should be.
In fact, recently a friend of mine asked me to look at his website’s sales copy. He had been struggling with tweaking and testing,
and his latest salesletter to beat his previous control only ended up bringing in an additional 0.02% response.
With all the marketing he was doing, his site was barely profitable. He even hired a decent copywriter to craft his latest salesletter, the new control.
Well, I took a look at his site, and I gotta say the salesletter didn’t look bad at all to me. Great headline, great lead, decent offer with
plenty of quality bonuses. Pushed the right hot buttons, used takeaway selling, good call to action. Overall a very good sales letter.
I asked him about his target market, and how he was getting them to his site. Uh oh.
It turned out he really wasn’t going after the right market.
Listen, you can hire the best copywriter in the world to write your sales letter, but if your target audience is
chiropractors and you send your promotion to lawyers, it's going to perform poorly, no matter how brilliant the sales copy.
Know this: Your market is THE biggest factor that contributes to the success or failure of your campaign. You've probably heard
"the money is in the list." Well, it's no different here. The list is the market.
Nothing earth-shattering so far, right? Good!
This is simple stuff, but it's amazing to me how often it's overlooked. But there's more...
Let's look at another scenario.
Julie was a client of mine who was selling an info-product to consumers. She had researched her market and found that there was indeed a high
demand for what she was offering.
She approached me to write both an online and offline salesletter, but there was one problem: her offer wasn't all
that it could be. In fact, the perceived value was pretty weak.
I mean after all, that's what your prospects use to judge the value of your offer—their perceived value.
Not only did her offer lack what many marketers like to call the "thud" factor, getting its name from the "thud" sound a fat info-product makes when you drop it on the table.
It also was made up of information her prospects could easily find online for free with very little digging.
Which brings up another point: if you target the right audience and have great sales copy, when your offer is lukewarm, you're not going to do well.
(We worked together to beef up her offer considerably—I'm going to show you some proven ways to do just that)
My point is, after the market, your OFFER is the next important thing that contributes to your success or failure. It's even more important than
your sales copy (Shhh..don't let some copywriters know I told you that!)
In other words, a killer offer with a weak salesletter will outsell a weak offer with a great salesletter.
With me so far? It doesn't get much simpler than this. But to get to the "Holy Grail" of sales, we need to fit these facts together a specific way.
And to do that, there's one more piece of the puzzle we need to add...
This is where a great salesletter can make the difference between a losing campaign and a homerun. But only if you've got your market and offer
locked up tight.
Remember some of those big launches we've seen recently? John Reese's Traffic Secrets 2.0, Frank Kern's Mass Control, Eben Pagan's Altitude.
The list goes on.
If you happened to check their respective blogs just prior to the launch, you would have seen scores of people posting comments about how they
were going to grab their product the minute it went on sale.
Forget about the salesletter. These people were sold before they even SAW the sales page.
In those cases, you had a red hot market. You had a solid offer (Remember that who the offer is from is part of the offer itself, much like the price, terms of payment,
guarantee, etc. It's ALL part of the offer).
So Who Needs The Salesletter, Right?
Well, not so fast. There were a lot of people on the fence that needed further convincing. A top salesletter makes the difference between
selling to just rabid buyers (who have already made up their minds to buy) and selling to everyone else in the market (who haven't
decided yet and need further persuasion).
Look, the bottom line is this: Get your market and offer right, and you truly are only ONE salesletter away from a massive profit windfall!
So to summarize, the three things, in order of importance, that contribute toward sales conversions are:
- Your market
- Your offer
- Your sales copy or salesletter
So if you email your promotion to the wrong list, it doesn’t matter how great your offer or your copy is.
If you email your promo to the right list, but the offer is weak, your copy is only going to go so far.
But if your market and offer are both right, only then should you look to your copy to boost response.
This synergy between the market, offer, and sales copy is where you find what I call the Money Zone.
The "Money Zone" is where your market, offer, and sales copy meets.
Get it right and your sales campaign simply cannot fail!
Now there is one more factor that can undoubtedly affect your sales. And that's the timing of your promotion.
Let's face it, nobody wants to do a product launch right after a national or worldwide tragedy. History is littered with examples,
but we only need to look to the day after 9/11 to confirm this truth.
And there are always people in your market who are in a better position to buy one day versus another. Maybe they just got paid, or
have more disposable income at the moment.
The reason I don't count the timing as a Money Zone factor per se, is because of something called the Moving Parade.
What The Heck Does A Parade Have To Do With Selling?
The Moving parade simply states that there are always a number of people entering your market at any given moment, and there are always people
leaving your market.
You can take it a step further and include those people in your market who are in the position to buy at that moment versus those that
aren't.
There are always business owners, for example, who have great sales one month and mediocre sales the next.
But our marketing campaigns should never be one shot deals. We should never send one promotion, one email, or advertise in an ezine just once and expect
to get all our sales from that one promo. The majority of people don't buy the first time they are alerted to your campaign.
In fact, research shows it takes on average between 7 to 11 impressions to get the maximum sales out of a given market.
So if timing is an issue (and it always is), we simply do additional promotions, while keeping our market-offer-copy model intact.It's that Money Zone model that's going to guarantee our success!
Now here's the thing...

It's not that they're lazy about it (although some are), it's just that they never learned how to make this model work for them. Either
they got an earful of useless theory or just found it too difficult to do.
